WRA Project #3 Reflection

In my WRA 150 class, we had to construct a music research paper and I thought it was an awesome project because everyone loves some type of music. Being that I’m big on Rap/Hip-hop and R&B music, I choose to do my essay on these two genres. My main research question was “why are sexual lyrics in R&B more socially accepted than sexual lyrics in Rap/Hip-hop.” Answering this question was so fun because I got analyze music the whole time I was working. Writing the paper was really easy until I got to the research part. Indeed, it was very difficult to find sophisticated research about sexual lyrics on both the database and the web. I had to search very hard for the research that I did find but I think that it all worked out in the end. Another issue I had was making it longer. I’ve never written a 6-8 page paper and since I had both pictures and lyrics within the paper, it needed to be more towards the 8 pages. In the end I got 7 pages of a very good well-written and supported research paper. I’m very proud of this paper.

WRA 150 Project #2 Reflection

In My WRA 150 class, we were asked to pick a popular cultural artifact and discuss a theme or topic surrounding it. For me personally, I choose to talk about Jordan sneakers, more specifically, newly released Jordan sneakers. Jordan sneakers have become very popular and when they are newly released they create chaos because there are so few released. This topic was easy for me to talk about being that I experience this madness year after year, which ultimately builds my credibility. I’ve been wearing Jordan sneakers for a long time and I’m around people who love Jordan sneakers on a daily basis. For me, Jordan were a fun and easy topic to discuss because they’re such a huge factor in my life. While writing this essay, I had few troubles, but I did have some. The hardest part for me was using a database and citing sources from a database, because it’s not something that I’m very familiar with.  Other than these small troubles, I had a great time proving that Jordan sneakers are a popular cultural artifact and that the issues surrounding them occur because the producers don’t produce enough and are unorganized on release day.

WRA "Football Red and Baseball Green" Response

What is Invention?
In this essay, the writer had to engage in many things to actually write the essay. Murray Ross had to know a lot about both football and baseball. Ross had to know and analyze every component of both sports and also know a lot about the history of the sport and some key players of the sport so I’m sure Ross spent a lot of time doing research.
What Is Being Invented
Ross is basically trying to say the spectator sports, mainly baseball and football have heroic and pastoral conventions that underlie them. Ross shows how baseball relates to life as well as football. Ross explains how football is an heroic sport and baseball is more pastoral. Ross also talks about how football has kind of replaced baseball and its somewhat symbolic in our society.
Arrangement
The author puts football in relation to baseball
The author does this by first explaining baseball and how it’s a more pastoral sport. She describes the game and how the signals and every aspect to baseball supports the argument. Then Ross transitions into football and explains how football is more heroic or barbaric if you will. Ross talks about how football is kind of like the military with all the physical contact and even the language.
Revision
Ross is saying that with football being the more popular or symbolic sport, it shows that our nation is forgetting about the rural vision of our nation and living a life that creates more challenges.

WRA 150 Project #1 Reflection

For my WRA 150 class we had to choose a literacy to define and connect it to a larger issue. Being that social networks play a big role in my life and I see so many issues occur through them I choose to do my project on an up and coming social network known as Instagram. The picture above to me symbolizes instagram and its many issues such as: bullying, insecurities, inappropiate pictures, etc.  I had so many great personal stories that would support my arguements and I knew many users who would be willing to do an interview with me. While working on this project, I learned how to correctly do in-text citations which was a big thing. I already knew how to do a work cited page, for the most part, but I had been priviously misdirected on how to correctly cite in text. My weaknesses were trying not to be bias in the paper.

Elizabeth Wong Response WRA 150 assignment

The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl Response

1.       Elizabeth Wong is a Chinese- American who grew up in Chinatown, Los Angeles. She is a playwright and television writer who was educated at the University of Southern California and New York University.

2.       In Elizabeth Wong’s essay, she makes specific moves just like the “White Buds on an Apple Tree Essay”. Elizabeth Wong gives tells us how she was forced into learning Chinese in the beginning and then gives some reasons as to why she didn’t feel the need to learn it. She felt as if her favorite books where in English and everyone praised her for speaking English so well so why would she want to speak like the “chaotic and frenzied gibberish” that she saw the other Chinese speaking. The she moves into talking about her brother and how he criticized and resented learning Chinese even more than her.

3.       Elizabeth Wong introduces her essay by describing how the school that her and her brother once went to looks now. She concludes her essay by talking about her mother’s  broken English and then moves into talking about how she stopped going to the Chinese school and thought of herself as multi-cultural.

4.       It is apparent that Elizabeth Wong regrets her assimilation into American culture when she says “At last, I was one of you; I wasn’t one of them. Sadly, I still am. This says that she is sad that she is still American.

educational system needs change

In today’s school system we need more freedom. I’m not saying that administrators should cut out all rules and regulations, but allow students to live and be students. I feel like a lot of teachers focus on the wrong things and it’s very petty. I don’t understand why students can’t have their phones out during passing time or lunch. I feel like that is just ridiculous. Also, I don’t think being suspended for accumulated tardies is necessary. If students weren’t getting suspended for stupid stuff like tardies, then more learning would take place. I really feel like students are in jail when they go to school. Indeed, if schools started treating students more like adults then maybe they’ll be more prepared for college when the time comes. I think that high schools should have the same rules as college, since that’s the main goal.
Also, I feel as if schools need a better variety of lunch for elementary students and allow open campus lunch for high school students. Surly, it has always bothered me that I am forced to pay for food that I don’t want to eat. If I was able to leave school and go get lunch then I would be much more satisfied and it would allow me to feel free and not trapped for so long. Once again, this all comes back to treating high school students like adults. So the main thing I feel that the educational systems needs is rules and regulations that allow high school students to be treated more like adults. Indeed, this will allow them to have an easier transition into college which will allow them to know how to handle their new environment. The educational system needs a change and I feel as if great progress would be made if these changes occurred.

I'm most proud of myself for

There are many things that I am proud of about myself because I work hard to be the best person that I can be! I would have to say that the thing that I am most proud about is the fact that I’m living my dream. I have always dreamed of attending Michigan State University and I’ve always aspired to become a pediatrician. In the fall, I will be attending Michigan State University as a premed student and there is nothing that I am more proud of at the moment. Michigan State has a lot of applicants and I’m honored to have been accepted; I can’t wait until I’m officially a SPARTAN! #GOGREEN!! In today’s society, education is vital, and it’s my number one priority. I’ve work hard during high school which has allowed many doors to open for me and I’m am extremely proud of that! I can’t wait to get to Michigan State and begin pursing my education.
Also, this is so important to me because I am the first in my family to attend college; well a couple attended, but none of them completed. I feel like such a good child. Whenever my parents go anywhere they brag on my success and it can get irritating sometimes but I know that they’re just really proud of me. I hope that I do great things in college and I’m going to work my hardest by balancing my time, studying, and attending class daily. When I get in college I want to continue doing things that will make myself and my family proud. My education is so important to my future and I am truly proud that I have earned the opportunity to attend Michigan State University as a focused and determined premedical student who is goal-oriented and wants to succeed.
